The ʻaʻaliʻi is a native Hawaiian plant that has been used for centuries by Hawaiians for its many practical and decorative purposes. The fruit and leaves of ʻaʻaliʻi are used by lei makers. It is resistant to drought, wind, and salt spray. It prunes well and can be shaped into a small tree, topiary, hedge, or espalier. ʻAʻaliʻi are good companion plant for other native plants in dry, windy, full-sun areas where few other plants will survive.
