Much less common that ʻōhelo ʻai, this species is also called Tree ʻŌhelo because it grows upright. One distinguishing characteristic is this species is delicious while the other two species of ʻōhelo are evergreen. The tiny seeds can be difficult to germinate but this slow growing small shrubby tree will live 20+ years. They prefer cooler high elevations in mesic forests with plenty moisture but good drainage.
